Laser Safety

1 – For any installation of class 3R, 3B or 4 lasers, please contact the EP Safety Office and the EP Laser Safety Officer (LSO) or his Deputy (DLSO) beforehand:
- Stéphane Détraz – stephane.detraz@cern.ch (LSO)
- Jan Troska (Jan.troska@cern.ch) (DLSO)
2 – Any class 3B or 4 lasers shall be used inside a properly equipped DLA (Designated Laser Area).
3 – For every DLA a Laser Safety Support Officer (LSSO) shall be appointed by the Technical Coordinator, and the DSO (Department Safety Officer of EP Department) shall be informed.
4 – The LSSO shall follow the necessary “Laser Expert” safety training. This training is under development at CERN. Therefore, the LSSO should discuss his/her level of expertise with the LSO who will find an alternative training if needed.
5 – The LSSO shall register the laser in NIRREG (https://cmmsx.cern.ch) with the help of LSO.
6 – The LSSO shall prepare the Laser Safety Assessment under the LSO supervision.
7 – The LSSO and Laser responsible will implement the safety measures.
When the safety inspection is performed and all safety requirements are fulfilled, the green light is given to operate with the new laser installation.
This process should start from few months before your experiment is installed at CERN.
